Originally cultivated by Amerindians, the sunflower was imported to Europe by the Spanish in the 16th century. Its cultivation developed particularly in Russia. Today, it is widely grown on every continent. The word sunflower comes from the Italian tornasole or Spanish tornasol, meaning that turns towards the sun, in allusion to the way this plant pivots on its stem to follow the path of the sun throughout the day.
